Description: Hand blown glass
Artist: Graeme Hawes
Profile: Graeme Hawes graduated from Sunderland University with a BA (Hons) in 3D Design in ceramics and glass before gaining a MA in glass design at the Royal College of Art in 1993. Upon completing his Masters Degree in 1995 he has enjoyed working as a freelance glassmaker and designer, supplying his work to many shops and galleries throughout the UK and abroad. He is currently a visiting lecturer at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University and Lancaster Central University. Graeme and fellow artist Michaela Grimshaw have combined their skills, flair and talent in a new and exciting venture called Bi-Me Ltd which produces unique yet both decorative and functional hand crafted glass. The movement and fluidity of the material in the making process is essential to the creation of their free blown work and acts as a key source of inspiration in the final design transferred into the resultant form. In contrast Michaela produces plaster moulds into which Graeme blows the molten glass. Here the mould is an aid giving the product its initial form and relief which is picked up and then manipulated into a finished piece. The work is decorative and functional, handmade and unique. Graeme and Michaela made an installation “Falling Feather”: four glass feathers suspended from ceiling eyebolts and the lowest feather resting on a plinth, which was selected by the New London Glass Society for “Tracks”, an exhibition of 13 glass artists in the London Underground station, Gloucester Road December 2001 - January 2002. It was also on display in the gallery ‘Espai Vidre’ in the city centre of Barcelona, from 16th May - 30th July 2002. Work has also been featured in the Guardian weekend supplement, The Sunday Times Style Magazine, Elle Decoration, Intra Magazine, Kitchens Bedrooms and Bathrooms and The Evening Standard.
