Title:  Balancing Act
 POA

Description: Ceramic
Artist: Angie Thirkell
Profile: Artist Statement: My work engages in a kind of domestic surrealism, somewhere between the Mad Hatter’s tea party and the elaborate table settings of the Brighton Pavilion. It is a representation of ordinary things as a highly decorated sculptural installation. The starting point of my project is the appropriation of typical domestic objects, which I recycle to create new hybrid objects. The bodies are first molded and then slip-cast in porcelain and sometimes attached to glassware. The pieces are semi-functional but can be interpreted as representations of well-known domestic objects. My use of familiar domestic wares evokes memories from the past and these memories are generally subjective and often based solely on a personal feeling. This reorganization of things can bring out meanings that were previously only implicit, but it can also open up new meanings. It is difficult however to predict what significance things may have for different people, but I am content to let the viewer draw his or her own conclusions.
